Melissa's childishness and apparent ADHD brings a lot of energy to the show. Combined with Joe's charming sarcasm and egocentricity, Ryder's adorable and innocent goofiness and Lennox's selfish yet nurturing concerns about the world makes Melissa and Joey delightfully entertaining, a pleasure to watch!
IllogicalGenius 24 September I was drawn to this show by the alluring trailer but as with most crappy shows all the best parts are in the trailer. The acting is so blindly awkward. I can't stand to watch, as with the newer series of Sabrina the teenage witch, Melissa has lost her knack for acting, at times it's almost painful to watch.
As someone else pointed out the only actors with seemingly any talent is the kids, especially 'Lennox'. The cast are rigid with one another and though they're saying 'I love yous' their body language says otherwise.
There's no fluidity or believablity. I feel like theirs room for ad-libbing. It's obvious what they want to achieve with this show but their efforts fall short. Personally, a story which involves two actors who are life long friends who play people who fall in love is a recipe for disaster.
That idea is really odd for me. I wholeheartedly agree with the other negative reviews, how has this show lasted so long?! UncleManifestor 18 December Animatronics have come a long way since the days of Salem the Cat, but as Joe proves, there is still a long way to go.
Yes, he nearly looks real, but the 'acting' is where the technology falls short. I could see Joe doing very well if they ever made a TV series of Pinocchio as he has already managed to master the art of wooden acting. The 'jokes' are more tired than a sloth on a Nytol drip, I will never complain about Royal Mail again after seeing how bad the delivery can be. This show would suit audiences that either cant or don't want to think, ones that are just happy to watch the pretty colours on the screen and laugh when prompted.
It is ideal for those that like to complete jigsaw puzzles with less than 10 pieces or who rate colouring by numbers as a challenging pursuit. For someone like myself this show was more painful viewing than staring at the sun through a telescope. I've watched every show Melissa has ever been in, and I've enjoyed all of them. However, so far her character on Melissa and Joey is a little over the top. I think the character needs to be toned down a little, in many different areas.
First, Melissa is a beautiful girl. Why cover her face in what appears to be clown make up? Second, the outfits she wears are a little bit too "Soap Opera. And third, the character is somewhat annoying. She's way too loud, and her lines seem just a little to "snappy," and unnatural. She sounds like how you would expect someone to sound after drinking 4 pots of coffee.
I know that none of this is the fault of the actress, because I've seen her other shows, and her characters have all been played really well.
I think the show has potential, and I like the storyline so far Melissa's character and even Joey's to a degree just need to be toned down. SeksWithTheStars 11 May I just watched the first five minutes of this vacuum. It's truly one of the worst shows I've ever seen. Throughout that unbearably long five minutes, I actually had to create my own entertainment based on the show itself, that's how god awful it is.
I started saying the word "laugh" every time there was supposed to be a funny part. It's like I recognise the joke they're trying to make but it's just done so poorly that I find absolutely no humour in it at all. Most times I don't mind a laugh track, I enjoyed Friends for example. I continue to enjoy The Big Bang Theory and Mike and Molly, but this abortion of comedy had me wanting to poke at my ears with a long, pointy object just so I wouldn't hear that mind numbing clattering ever again.
I seriously cannot believe that this show made it past it's first episode let alone get another season. When I see quality shows cancelled or not even given a proper go it bugs the hell out of me but to see a show like this, one of the single worst atrocity's mankind has inflicted upon it's fellow man since the Holocaust, get renewed it makes me die a little inside.
I fear for the fate of humanity if the general consensus is that this is a quality show, I really do. A lot of fun sheilaholland1 24 January I came across this programme whilst staying in New York and found I really enjoyed it. The themes and ideas are brilliant and love the role reversal aspect. Melissa's character is so out there and Joey does think he is god's gift to women, which makes it so easy to laugh at them. But, you do feel the love in the family despite this and I think it has been executed very well.
It tugs at the heartstrings very well and really makes you want the characters to be happy, which I've not felt from a programme in so long. Of course the ideas are out there, which makes it so much easier to laugh at, this is a comedy after all. This may not be for everyone but I have really enjoyed it and have watched every episode so far The first 2 seasons were great.
The first season had 30 episodes and the second had I get that considering Melissa was pregnant and had her baby just before the second season ended. But I digress, the reason I named this review "What happened? Where is Stephanie? Why isn't there anymore Toledo crisis Mel has to face? Are there new writers or something? The 3rd season is focusing mostly on relationships with Mel and some random guy and Joey with some random girl, even Lennox with too many boyfriends to count.
I loved Ryder's gf Holly, too bad she dumped him. Well anyway I miss the other topics rather than fixing or not fixing relationships. The dialogue is smart and funny, the stories are very interesting, and moreover, presented in an entertaining way. The show is an excellent way to just sit and relax for 30 minutes. Luckily, ABC Family gave it a green light, ordering 30 episodes for the first season, with a second one upcoming.

Why didn't you try something like that? Mel : Eh, been there, done that. I certainly don't blame Lucy who does her best with the flat "Yes Man" character she has. The rest of the cast is quite good, and on the episodes where they are given some great material, they really knock it out of the park. Melissa Joan Hart can be a bit over the top at times, but she has always had that tendency. They've also go fun guest stars like Christopher Rich and Julia Duffy.
Finally, there's the sex. I must admit I was shocked at just how much of the show is based on sexual humor and double meanings. This is definitely a more adult oriented show, but it is obviously aiming for a slightly younger market. Even so, I usually find some decent laughs in every episode.
ABC Family aired twelve episodes in later summer and fall last year, and those are the ones that are collected in this two disc set. Coincidentally, it's released just in time to remind us about the show before the second half of season one starts. Extras include a gag reel and the cast talking about real life family dynamics and issues. When the show comes back, I'll be tuning in because I get some laughs from it, but I doubt it will become a classic sitcom. Dancing with the Stars of Toledo.
