If you only know how to write essays or poems or short stories, be prepared to unlearn everything you've ever been taught. It takes a lot of late nights, a lot of practice, and lots of big red edits on your stories to get good at writing journalistically. Get comfortable with criticism and don't take anything too personally. Don't let anyone make you feel like you're not talented. No two people have the exact same writing style. This is bound to make you clash with a professor at some point. What they think sounds good won't always be what you think sounds good.
While you're putting up a fight about sentence structure, just remember that they've been in this business for way longer than you have and most of the time, they know what works.
Take their advice and figure out how to work their suggestions in while still keeping your unique voice. Dabble in everything! Join the school yearbook, the newspaper, the magazine, the TV and radio stations, photography club, all of it!
Get a little bit of experience in every field you can. Hiring editors want to see that you were involved on campus beyond internships. Most schools will make you minor in something that isn't journalism-related. Be prepared to declare a second major or a minor in something other than journalism.
Most managers in this industry don't look at minors anyway, so if you have a passion for something totally unrelated like art history, take it! Social media is your new BFF.
