Why saiga conversion

If you are lucky, the square hole for the pistol grip nut will already be cut. If it is not make necessary measurements approximately 2 millimeters forward of the old trigger hole and I recommend tracing a pistol grip nut as a guide for the hole itself. Cutting the hole can be done with a Dremel if you are careful and go slowly.

I also recommend removing the magazine release and obtaining a proper AKM unit, which can be riveted through the same holes as the original Saiga part. While it is possible to retain the original trigger guard and either weld it to the magazine release or feed its previously riveted foot underneath the original magazine release, replacement is far and away the cleanest option.

Once this back end conversion is complete, weld up the resulting holes for a cleaner look. I used a Tapco G2 AK trigger with a retaining plate for the pins in my conversion and like this configuration very much.

Those looking for a proper AKM clone should remove the optics rail. Furthermore, the Saiga optics rail is a much more modern version than what would be found on an AKMN. I have not had this done to my rifle yet, but plan to have the rail removed at the same time I have the conversion holes welded. Two of the simplest changes for this project are swapping the receiver dust cover and rear sight leaf for original AKM parts. I purchased both of these parts from Oleg at Rusmilitary.

Removing the rear leaf can be challenging, but I have had success using a screwdriver to push the front portion of the part down while pulling it out from the rear. Installing the new one can be accomplished by firmly pushing it in from the rear through the channels cut into the sides of the rear sight block.

This step may not be necessary if you plan to replace the whole rear sight block with a proper AKM one. The main difference between the Saiga rear sight block and an AKM one is the chamfer that surrounds the sight leaf.

Most people will not notice this unless they are actively looking for differences. Fortunately, this stamped steel cover is easily bent to fit. Dinzag offers a kit with the proper drill bit and tap to install the ramp, I would go this route if I were doing the conversion today. Changing the barrel parts is the most difficult part of the project. The original barrel parts will need to be pressed off and the new ones pressed on.

This is essentially impossible to accomplish without at least a ton press. After all original parts have been pressed off the barrel, press the AKM rear sight block on first. It is reasonably likely that you may be able to use the original pin hole to set this in place. Next, use an end mill or Dremel grinding wheel to cut alignment grooves into the barrel for the handguard retainer.

After the above steps are complete, the original gas port should be welded closed on the barrel. Placement for the original hole will likely fall just above the rear pin hole in the block. AKMs have a degree port that is drilled just behind the bayonet lug. This means that the two holes are a little over half a centimeter apart. I recommend countersinking this hole somewhat to allow for some flexibility in gas block placement.

If not, I could still replace the entire magazine catch and trigger guard assembly. There is a selector stop plate between the magazine catch part of the trigger guard and the receiver. This selector stop plate is a critical dimension and controls both the front to back and vertical position of the magazine. I found out later that this was not cut to accept a standard AK magazine. It is much easier to adjust without the trigger guard in place.

See the magazine catch adjustment section of the AK build tutorial for specific directions. I choose to weld them in, which necessitates refinishing at least the receiver I refinish the whole rifle to get a perfect color match. Here I sandblast the paint off to get a clean welding surface. It is critical that you adjust the selector stop plate and not the magazine catch. It feeds directly from the magazine. Adjusting the magazine catch will hold the magazine too low.

Remove remaining two rivets and remove the cover plate, revealing a receiver cut for standard AK parts. At this point you must decide whether you are going to leave the empty rivet holes on your rifle. Kalashnikov still works. Yes, the man that designed the AK still works there. Now look on the side of your gun, it says Izhmash on it and has their arrow in a triangle symbol.

Now is when you can crack an evil smile. In order to be imported into this country, it had to be neutered. It had to be in "sporting configuration" to be importable by law. That is why all the cool guns are made in the United States, or imported in a neutered form, or totally unavailable. The Saiga is only imported at this time, so they all start out with a conventional stock manner, which is NOT the way they are supposed to be configured. They put a plate over the trigger hole on the bottom of your receiver.

Underneath that plate is the trigger, which has the lever part where your finger would go removed, it is just the mechanical portion of it left behind. The problem is that the trigger you actually pull is connected to a bar But it is how they have to import them thanks to our laws. It is just removal of two pins, and your fire control group, which just slide in and out. The pins you need to remove are rivets though, so you have to grind their ends off to push them out.

Then you need to get a trigger guard, either screw on or weld on, and put on your new furniture. Some states, I know Connecticut and New York are in this group, still have elements of the gun ban in their state laws.

They say that any semi auto magazine fed shotgun cannot have a pistol grip below the receiver of the gun.

Ruins your plans I bet. Well it didn't ruin mine. You can put on a one piece skeleton stock or thumbhole stock to get around that and still get great ergonomics. Once you do this, OR attach a magazine of over 5, at 10, or over 10 round capacity? This means you have to comply with Federal law r. Yes, this means if you saw a gun store with a 12 round Surefire mag in their gun, they were breaking federal law.

Don't use it until you have the right American made parts in your gun, or you could go to jail. I'm not joking, and I am not mistaken. This law states that you cannot have more than 10 imported parts within a list of parts that are important. Check this website for easy check on this:. If you want to use higher capacity magazines on your Saiga shotgun, you have to replace other parts to make it legal by Federal law.

Might as well convert, buddy. You're going to be replacing stuff anyway. You get lighter pull, less friction, better feel, less slack, etc etc etc.

Pulling a trigger rather than pulling a lever that tilts a bar that pulls the real trigger isn't the best setup. You also get to pick your Length of Pull by choosing from all the AK stocks in the world, which vary from American use long to Asian use short.

I am one of those. So is every military on the planet. Twinsen 18 posts. Ragnar 5 posts. May 6, Intro: Your Saiga is made in the same plant, by the same people, and on the same lines as all Russian AK's. November 13, Modern Warfare, I must ask that you please cease and desist using an animated gif of my wife as your avatar.

September 17, Yeah, let's half ass it, why not? We don't take pride in a job well done in Amerika anymore do we comrade? There's a reason the world has progressed beyond using "vintage" military firearms. Groovy Write up!!!! I don't know what the exact wording on the mag limit for "sporting configuration" is 10 or more, or greater than Also, I said LOP is shortened ", when it's the length of the gun that is shortened that much.

LOP is dependent on the stock. Very nice write up Nice write up! Now everyone bookmark it and use it as your standard response when the guys come on here and look for validation on why they should not restore their firearm.

Damn I sick of that! But seriously, for the sticky, does r apply at "over 5 rounds", at 10 rounds, or "over 10 rounds" of mag capacity for shotguns? I looked it up on the net and got all sorts of answers. I know Bob Ash once gave a solid number, but I'm not going to be able to find that thread.

Money says Bob Ash or Tony Rumore know this one off the top of their head. For now, I have to advise people to be r compliant with anything over 5 rounds. Shotguns are either at that level or lower. Thank you so much for the positive info I'm convinced.

Also, as an example, I see Danzig has several of each kind of gizmo to choose from. How do I know what of a particular part to get? I don't have a clue what to get and what works best. Any help? Thanks in advance. There's a secret handshake!? Remember, hobbies don't count toward any real money-making time, you can't say that spending 10 hours on your hobby is like losing 10 hours of work I just wanted to add, in Connecticut a pistol grip and full conversion is legal.

You can not however, add a folding stock and a pistol grip evil features. Dumb but true. No it isn't, Dave. The law is that you can only have one of the following in a semi auto shotgun:. As the Saiga is a semi automatic shotgun with a detachable magazine to start with, it cannot have any of the other three items on that list.

That's what I went with, and I'd advise that to you. Just get a 1 hook, that way you don't have to cut your receiver.
