Fastening off is an important step in crochet because this action means that all of the stitches in your crocheted creation will stay put.
Fastening off the ends also means that there is less risk of the yarn ends getting caught and undoing all of your careful work. The most popular way of finishing off a crochet project is to weave in the ends, which involves embedding extra yarn threads back into the crochet stitching until they blend in seamlessly.
A tutorial by Amigu World. And these are instructions for right-handed crocheters, in American crocheting terms.

Cut the yarn leaving a tail approx 15cm-long. Wrap the yarn round the hook yrh and pull through the loop.
Remove the hook and pull the yarn tail to tighten it up. To weave in your crochet ends, thread your tail onto a yarn needle also called a tapestry needle. On the wrong side of your crochet, weave the needle down in and out of the back of a few stitches as shown in the picture. Weave the needle back going in an upwards direction. Thank you : - June. Weave through front loops: Cut the yarn leaving a long yarn end, then draw the cut end through the last loop and pull tight. Thread the yarn end through a yarn needle and gather the final stitches by weaving the needle through the front loop of each st around the gap. Pull tight to close the gap, then knot the yarn around the post of a stitch. Sc2tog across the gap: skip 1st st, insert hook into 2nd st and draw up a loop, skip 3rd st, insert hook into 4th st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
